Behind the Doodles: How I Design Quirky Greeting Cards
There’s something magical about receiving a handwritten card, especially when it’s fun, quirky, and full of personality. At Quirky Doodles, every design starts with an idea—sometimes sparked by a random thought, a funny conversation, or even a pun that pops into my head. But how does a simple idea turn into a finished greeting card? Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at my design process.
Step 1: Doodling on My iPad
Every card begins its journey on my iPad. Using my digital tools, I sketch out rough ideas, playing with different compositions, hand-drawn fonts, and illustrations. Sometimes a design works right away, but most of the time, it takes a bit of tweaking—adjusting colours, line thickness, and spacing until it feels just right. This is where the personality of each card really comes to life!
Step 2: Perfecting the Design & Prepping for Print
Once I’m happy with the final sketch (which could take days), I refine the details and get it print-ready. This involves making sure the colours are vibrant, the text is perfectly placed, and the design will look just as good on paper as it does on screen. Once everything is ready to go, I send the artwork to my trusted printers and await their arrival.
Step 3: Printing on FSC Certified Paper
Sustainability is important to me, which is why all of my cards are printed on FSC Certified paper. This ensures that the paper comes from responsibly managed forests, reducing environmental impact. The end result is a high-quality card that looks and feels great (I am biased) while being kind to the planet.
Step 4: Packaging with a Green Touch
Once printed, each card is carefully packed with a kraft envelope and protected in a compostable cellophane bag. This not only keeps the card in perfect condition but also aligns with my goal of reducing waste and using eco-friendly materials wherever possible. Both our cards and envelopes can be recycled.
Step 5: Ready to Make Someone Smile!
After all that, my quirky greeting cards are ready to be shared with the world! Whether you’re sending a sarcastic birthday wish, a pun-filled thank-you, or just a card to brighten someone’s day, my designs are made to spread a little joy (and maybe a giggle too!).
I love creating cards that make people smile, and knowing that each one has been made with care—from the very first sketch to the final packaged product—makes the process even more rewarding.
